Post one brief. Matching Online Advertising agencies in Africa reply to you.

Agencies marked Verified have been checked against four things: that the business trades under the name given, that its contact details resolve to it, that the services claimed match demonstrable work, and that the stated minimum budget reflects real engagements. The others are listed from their own websites and have not been checked yet.

Listings are ordered by membership placement, then by OAN Score. Membership does not affect the score itself. Tier is not one of its inputs, so placement cannot buy a better number. Read the full method.

What is an Online Advertising agency?

An online advertising agency plans and buys ad space across the internet for a business and reports what the spending produced. The space includes search results, social networks, display ads on websites and apps, video and audio. It also includes connected TV (streaming television delivered over an internet connection) and the ads sold on retailers’ own sites, which are called retail media.

Space is bought by the click, by the thousand times an ad is shown (an impression) or by the view. PPC marketing covers buying by the click. Online advertising is the wider job of choosing the channels, audiences and formats that the budget goes to.

Its central question is whether the advertising caused the sale. A platform report counts conversions that followed an ad, including ones that would have happened anyway. Incrementality measures the difference.

Google’s Conversion Lift documentation describes splitting an audience into a group that sees the ads and a control group that does not. The difference in conversions between the two is read as the effect of the ads. An agency that raises incrementality before quoting a return on ad spend (ROAS), the sales produced for each dollar of advertising, is trying to measure what the spending caused.

What Online Advertising costs

An online advertising engagement has several layers of cost, and the agency’s fee is one of them. The media budget buys the ad space. Part of it can go to the platform that buys the space, to data used for targeting and to the agency’s fee. The share that reaches the ad space itself is called working media, and each agency should state it in cents per dollar.

The fee is a percentage of the media budget, a flat monthly retainer or a mix of the two. A percentage pays the agency more as the budget grows, which is manageable if the contract also names an efficiency target that the agency answers for.

Compare quotes on cost per result, because the units differ. Ads are bought by the click, by the thousand impressions or by the thousand viewable impressions. Google’s Active View documentation counts a display ad as viewable when half of it is on screen for one second. A video ad needs two seconds.

Ask whether the agency buys on your account or on its own and re-bills you. If it re-bills, ask what it adds, and ask for the platform’s invoices.

How to choose an Online Advertising agency

Choose an online advertising agency by the channels your customers use and by how the agency proves that the advertising worked. If most of your demand is people already searching for what you sell, a PPC agency fits the work, because paid search is the channel that captures that demand. If you need to create demand that does not yet exist, a media agency fits better, because video, connected TV and social ads reach people who are not searching yet.

Three questions then separate agencies. Ask how it will measure what the advertising caused. An agency that offers a test with a control group is answering that question, and one that offers only the conversions the platform reports is not.

Ask what share of impressions will be viewable and what happens to the rest. Google says its Active View measurement shows when an ad is viewable but cannot guarantee that anyone was looking. A viewable rate shows an ad could be seen and nothing more.

Ask where the ads ran. A report of the sites, apps and channels that carried them lets you check the budget against the audience you asked for. The guide to choosing a digital marketing agency covers the steps that apply to any discipline.

Common questions about Online Advertising agencies

Is online advertising bought by the click or by the impression?

Several units exist. Cost-per-click buying charges when someone clicks an ad. Buying by the thousand impressions, known as CPM, charges each time an ad is shown a thousand times, whether or not anyone clicks. Google also offers viewable CPM, which charges only for impressions that meet its viewability standard. Each unit changes what you compare, so ask every agency to quote cost per result as well as the unit price.

What is programmatic advertising?

Programmatic advertising buys ad space through software, usually by running an automated auction each time a page or app loads, instead of agreeing a deal with each publisher. A demand-side platform, or DSP, is the software the buyer uses. It reaches thousands of sites and apps, which makes a report of where the ads ran important.

What should an online advertising report show?

A report should show spend, impressions, viewable impressions, clicks and conversions for each channel, with the cost per conversion. It should also name the sites and apps where the ads ran and give the result of any control-group test. A single blended return mixes channels that behave differently. Ask what the agency will change next month and why.

Should the advertising accounts be in my name?

Where the platform allows it, run campaigns in accounts held in your company’s name and give the agency access. Then the campaign history, audiences and creative stay with you if you change agency. Before work starts, ask which platforms the agency will use and who will hold each account.
