Post one brief. Matching SEO agencies in South Africa reply to you.

Agencies marked Verified have been checked against four things: that the business trades under the name given, that its contact details resolve to it, that the services claimed match demonstrable work, and that the stated minimum budget reflects real engagements. The others are listed from their own websites and have not been checked yet.

Listings are ordered by membership placement, then by OAN Score. Membership does not affect the score itself. Tier is not one of its inputs, so placement cannot buy a better number. Read the full method.

What is an SEO agency?

An SEO agency works to increase the visits a business earns from search engines without paying for each one. Google’s guide to hiring an SEO states that the company never accepts money to include or rank sites in its search results, and that appearing in them costs nothing. A business therefore buys work from an SEO agency: changes to its site, new content, and outreach to other sites.

The work falls into three jobs that agencies often sell as one. Technical work makes a site easy for search engines to crawl, meaning to find and read its pages. It covers working links, redirects from old addresses to new ones, a clear structure and fast pages. Content work builds pages that answer what people search for, in the words they use. Authority work earns links and mentions from other sites, which give search engines a reason to rank the business above a competitor.

Agencies differ in which of the three they do well, and a proposal that does not say which one it leads with is hard to compare. SEO is a separate discipline from PPC marketing, in which a business pays for each click on an advertisement.

What SEO agencies do

  • Technical audits and crawl diagnostics
  • Keyword and search intent research
  • On-page optimisation and internal linking
  • Content strategy and production
  • Digital PR and link earning
  • Local and multi-location SEO
  • Ecommerce and product catalogue SEO
  • International and multilingual SEO
  • Migration planning and redirect mapping
  • Analytics, tracking and attribution
  • Generative engine optimisation (AI search)

What SEO costs

SEO is charged as a monthly retainer, a fixed price for a project, or an hourly fee, and the right one depends on whether the work continues or ends. A retainer buys an agreed amount of work each month and suits content, links and monitoring, which have no natural end date. A fixed price suits a bounded job such as an audit, a site migration or a one-off set of new pages. An hourly fee suits advice and training.

What sets the price is the amount of work and who does it. A fee pays for hours, so it rises with the seniority of the people and the volume of content.

The cost that matters most often sits outside the invoice. A strategy that needs new pages, developer time or sign-off from your team costs you that time whatever the agency charges. An agency that recommends work you cannot resource is a worse buy than one that charges more and plans around your capacity.

No fair price exists until an agency has seen the site, the searches you want to win and the competition, so be wary of a quote given without that review. Before comparing two quotes, ask what each includes every month in hours or deliverables and who makes the changes on the site. Ask also whether an audit fee comes first and how long the minimum term runs.

How to choose an SEO agency

Choose an SEO agency by what it will change on your site, who will make the change and how you will see progress. Start by asking whether you need one. Google says a small local business can probably do much of the work itself. It names a site redesign or a launch as a great time to bring in a specialist.

Then check the timetable. Google’s SEO Starter Guide says changes can take from a few hours to several months to show, so SEO will not rescue a quarter that has already started. How long SEO takes depends on the site and its competition. If you need visits now, pay-per-click advertising buys them for as long as the budget lasts.

Four questions then separate capable agencies from weak ones. Ask which of the three jobs it will do first and why: an agency that answers from your own site’s data has looked at it. Ask for a site whose rankings it inherited and improved, because recovering a damaged site is harder than growing a healthy one and shows more.

Ask how it earns links. Google’s spam policies name buying links for ranking purposes as link spam, and the penalty falls on your site. Ask what access it needs, and give read access to Search Console only while it audits.

Common questions about SEO agencies

Can an SEO agency guarantee a first-page ranking?

No. Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and it advises finding another provider if one promises first place. An agency can commit to what it controls: fixes shipped, pages published and reports delivered by agreed dates. Judge it against those commitments, and against the searches you appear for over time.

Do I need an SEO agency at all?

Not always. Google says a small local business can probably do much of the work itself, and it points to its own SEO Starter Guide as the place to begin. An agency earns its fee when the job needs skills or hours you lack. Examples are a site migration, a technical fault, or content at a scale your team cannot write.

What access does an SEO agency need?

Start with read access to Google Search Console and your analytics. Google advises against giving write access during an audit. Later the agency needs a way to change pages, either through your content management system or through your developer. Keep every account in your company’s name and add the agency as a user, so the data and history stay with you if you part.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Google says some changes show within hours and others take several months, and it suggests waiting a few weeks before judging them. A technical fix can show once search engines recrawl the page. Growth in qualified visits takes longer, and it depends on the competition and on how quickly your team ships the agency’s recommendations.

Is generative engine optimisation different from SEO?

Mostly not. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond the SEO basics, and need no special markup or AI text files. If an agency sells generative engine optimisation (GEO) as a separate service, ask what it will do that SEO would not, and how it will measure the result.

What should an SEO agency report each month?

A report should show what changed on the site, how many pages are indexed, and the searches you appear for with the clicks they bring. It should then show the enquiries or sales from organic visits and the work planned next. Indexed pages and impressions move before traffic does. Ask for searches that include your own name to be reported separately.
